| Hard Times Cafe by Rich Rabassa Did someone say Chili Parlor? What the heck is a Chili Parlor? Well head down to the newly opened Hard Times Cafe in Charlotte and find out! Since 1980, this 14 location cafe has been providing an authentic chili parlor experience. With historically correct versions of the dishes created on the turn-of-the-century cattle drives of the southwest and in Cincinnati chili parlors of the Midwest, this cafe serves up one great bowl of chili (with or without beans)! After cooking, they age the chili a full 24 hours before serving. That along with some interesting spice combinations make for a wonderful experience. Now, most of the beer gourmets that are reading this article are familiar with the beer samplers at most brewpubs, well Hard Times dishes up a similar chili sampler of their three chili varieties (plus a seasonal). Speaking or beer, Hard Times Cafe also brews it's own tasty lager and Root Beer! Both are refreshing and go great with any of the chili dishes. As well as the House Lager, they also have an impressive beer selection with everything from local beers from Johnson Beer Company to some obscure belgian whites... You best bet is to take a seat at the counter and chat with wonderful people frantically pulling beers and dishing the chili!
